Video Playback Problems

File won't play or has no sound or has no video or looks bad

If you have JRiver Media Center 16.0 or above, just choose the automatic Red October setting under video options. Start with Standard and make sure it works well, then try HQ. HQ requires a fairly powerful machine.

  • Check the DirectShow settings for the file type in MC Options/Playback/Video/DirectShow. If it is checked, uncheck the filetype for playback in DirectShow. Or vice versa.
  • Under MC's DirectShow settings, select a file type, and try changing the Video Renderer used.
  • Also see problems caused by other hardware and software in our Wiki topic called "Weird and wonderful (crashes, memory, stability,...)"

For example: Video Problems on Vista May Be Caused by UAC Settings http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=49701.msg340316#msg340316

  • If MC can't open the file with DirectShow, it may be imported as the wrong media type. The media type can be edited in the tag for the file. Installing better DirectShow filters may solve the problem. See the DirectShow topic and read about CCCP.

DirectShow a complete mystery?

If you have JRiver Media Center 16.0 or above, just choose the automatic Red October setting under video options. Start with Standard and make sure it works well, then try HQ. HQ requires a fairly powerful machine.

For older versions:

  • Please read the DirectShow Playback Guide on this wiki.
  • Some DirectShow filters don't work.
  • If you're having trouble, try playing the file with Windows Media Player. WMP uses DirectShow and results will be identical IF the filters used are the same.
