Deprecated Function

Line-in recording has been removed from Media Center as of v18, because the external library used was not cross-platform.

If you have an ASIO device, you can replicate this functionality by:

  • Configure Tools > Options > Audio > Audio Device to use Disk Writer as the output device.
  • Use File > Open Live to input from your ASIO device's line-in.

You may also be able to use the same type of system with the WDM Driver and Disk Writer, if you can play the Line-In feed with another application.

Media Center 17 Line-In Recording

The following instructions are relevant only to Media Center 17 or earlier.

Step 1: Set up

  1. Connect the source device to your sound card (most likely "line-in").
  2. Adjust the volume on the source device to a comfortable listening level. If it's too loud, you will experience distortion on the recording, too soft and there will be a lot of background noise.
  3. Adjust the recording volume level in Media Center. See "Volume setting" in the Line-In Recording Tips section.
  4. Position the source material just before the first track.

Step 2: Adjustments

  1. Select the Record icon button on the toolbar or go to Tools > Advanced Tools > Record Sound.
  2. Enter Artist and Album information. You may also click the Tracks button and enter all the track names. If you are connected to the Internet, you can use the "Search internet" feature to grab track names for almost any cassette or LP you are recording. Or you can just accept the default names and rename the tracks later.
  3. Go to Options > Encoding and select Encoding for: "Sound Recorder". Choose the encoding type and quality. These settings will be saved, so you only have to set them once (you can, of course, modify them later). See Encoding Settings for details about the various settings.
  4. Still in the Recorder Settings dialog box, select the File Location icon in the left frame and take note of or change the file locations. You can also set the file naming rules. See File Location Settings for details.
  5. Select Recorder Settings and select your Recording Source (probably "line-in"). See Recorder Settings for details about the other options.
  6. Start the source device and then click the Start button.

When the end of the source material is reached, the recording will end, if track splitting is enabled.

  • Click the Stop button to end the recording session.
  • Click Exit to close the recording dialog box.

Your file will be placed in the "Recently Imported" Playlist. You can edit, rename, or move the file to the directory of your choice from here.

Disk Space Requirements

Keep an eye on your free disk space. Since sound files use about 10 MB of disk space per minute, leaving the recorder running for a long time can take up a lot of disk space. You may want to limit the maximum length of a recorded file; you can do this in Recorder Settings: Tools > Advanced Tools > Record Sound > Options > Recorder Settings (in the left frame), then set the "Maximum track length".
