This device only supports some AVI files. According to DLink Specs, they must be MPEG4 layer only. Some AVI files appear to be playable (not grayed out) when viewing via DLink's server, but selecting them to play gives a "format not supported" error.

The DLink server supports mp4 files. However, it is supporting them in a non-standard way. This includes at least using a protocolInfo of

protocolInfo="http-get:*:video/MP4V-ES:DLNA.ORG_CI=0"

a Content-Type http header of "MP4V-ES", and non-standard headers. User:Gateley briefly attempted to emulate the non-standard behaviour, without success in playing a video.
