Playback device
This configures what device to use for audio playback of videos.
If you choose Same as device used in audio playback, the audio will be routed through the J. River audio engine. This allows using ASIO, WASAPI, DSPs like Room Correction, VST plugins, and more. See Audio Playback Options for configuring audio output.
You can also choose a system output device to target a specific soundcard, or Default Windows playback device to target the Windows default soundcard. These modes will not use the J. River audio engine, so high-quality output and/or DSP will be disabled.
Finally, you can choose Reclock, a popular third party audio renderer, here.
Connection type
Select the most correct connection type so that Media Center can properly decide if it should do encoded digital output like AC3 or if it should do analog output.
Please note that LPCM over an HDMI connection is considered an 'Analog connection' since in this context, analog really means 'not compressed'.
General Video Settings
Default audio language
Allows setting the language used for video playback when a video has more than one language.
Subtitles
Allows configuring subtitle behavior for video playback.
Default video renderer
Allows overriding the video renderer used when 'Automatic' is chosen for a file type. Only use this in advanced and/or specific cases.
Jump behavior
Changes how jump seeking should work (done with left / right keys during playback), etc.
Non-DVD Video
Aspect ratio
Allows controlling the aspect ratio of playback (16x9, etc.).
Crop edges
Trims a little from the edge of the picture. Useful for HDTV broadcasts that sometimes have junk in the overscan area of the picture.
Use WMV acceleration if available
Turn this off to disable WMV hardware acceleration. This is only needed for WMV files with DRM played on problematic hardware.
DVD
Swap fast play and jump commands
If you like to fast forward and rewind instead of jump when pushing left / right during playback, enable this option.
Use bitrate monitor
Enables J. River bitrate monitor filters, which shows the playback bitrate in the player display area of the program.
Use FFDShow video decoder for post processing
Allows performing advanced video processing using FFDShow.
Decoders, Renderers, & More
This allows configuring the playback method, decoders and more for each file type.

Many settings on this page only take effect when playback is stopped and restarted.
