MC can sync to most portable players (including iPods*), and even to most cell phones.

There are two different ways you can sync.

1. Drag and drop -- Just open "Sync to Handheld" or "Sync to Portable" in the Action Window (lower left). Then select the files you want, and drag them to the Action Window. Repeat until you've got everything queued, then press the Sync button.

2. Playlist Sync -- Use MC's options for Handhelds (aka Portables) to set your choices. You can select your own playlists, or you can select categories like "All Audio". Once you have it set, choose Sync in the Action Window.

Notes

The first time you connect a portable device, MC will analyze its contents. For large drives or slow connections, this may take a few minutes.

MC checks for connected devices each time it starts, so a device may take 30 to 60 seconds to show up after it's connected. When a newly connected device is detected, MC will open the Sync window automatically.

Redetect devices is an option under Handhelds/Portables. It will discard any history of devices and start over. This should be used with caution since your settings for the device will be lost.

MC can convert on-the-fly when it syncs. See the options for the device.

When you connect a device to MC, you will often (but not always) be able to play from it within MC. This is a limitation of the device.

Microsoft introduced something called "PlaysforSure" that is known by various names. MTP, for Microsoft Transfer Protocol, Janus, Vista Compatible, etc. This mode is only useful if you have Windows Media "protected" content you have purchased online. Devices that support MTP also usually have a "Mass Storage" mode which allows the device to be read as a removable drive. In this mode, the device will show up in Explorer with a drive letter associated. In MTP mode, there will be no drive letter for it.

*Apple has chosen to conceal their database on the Touch and iPhone, so these devices are not supported. If you want MC support, please let Apple know.
