AVI files should play fine. Please post a bug report in Interact if they don't.
The DLink server supports mp4 files. However, it is supporting them in a non-standard way. Media Center's UPnP server will not allow playing of mp4 files on the DLink DSM-320.
The DLink does multiple accesses per file which may lead to unexpected problems.
