Media Center includes a library tool called Analyze Audio that analyzes an audio or video file and stores information about that file in the Library and optionally in the file's Tags. For example, analyze audio will assess the file's loudness, dynamic range, and beats per minute. These tags are used by Media Center for some DSP functions, like Volume Leveling and Adaptive Volume, and can also be a source of useful information.
You can set Media Center to automatically analyze new files as they are imported. For more information, see the Import article. The Reporter tool will tell you what percentage of your Library's files have already been analyzed. A default smartlist that will display tracks that require the Audio Analyze tool to be run against them can be found under:
